"Communicator" (Also known as "Navigator")
software, one of the best Web browsers available.
cute2032.exe - This is the Windows 95/NT 4.0 version
of "Cute FTP," a great program for use in
FTP (File Transfer Protocol-sending files from one computer
to another) applications.
ie40win95.exe - This is the latest version of Microsoft's
"Internet Explorer" software, the other most
popular Web browser package.
mirc511t(2).exe - This is the latest version of mIRC,
a program used for Internet Relay Chat (Online discussion
groups).
winzip95.exe - This is the Windows 95/NT 4.0 version
of WinZip, the most popular file compression utility
on the Internet. Invaluable to anyone who wants to download
a compressed program from anywhere on the Internet.
Whether you choose to get Netscape or Internet Explorer
is entirely up to you; it's a matter of personal preference.
However, we do recommend that a browser be the very
first piece of software you download.
To download a file, first type the word bin and press
Enter.
Type hash and press Enter. (What these two previous
commands do is to first tell the computer you want to
download a "binary" file...like a program...and
then that you want to turn on "hash mark printing,"
or a sort of "progress indicator," which lets
you know that the download is still in progress).
To download any program, simply type the word get followed
by the name of the program (make sure it is spelled
correctly). So, for example, to download Netscape's
Communicator 4.0, you would type get cb32e404.exe and
press Enter.
WARNING: This will take quite some time to download!
Netscape's product is slightly smaller than Microsoft's,
but each is well over 10 Megabytes in size and will
take some time to download through the modem, so please
be patient.
When you have finished downloading all of the programs
you want to use, type the word quit and press Enter.
Then type exit and press Enter.
If you want to disconnect from the Net now while you
configure your Web browser:
Look at the bottom right hand corner of your screen
for a small icon that looks like a phone or a modem.
Position your mouse pointer over it and click your RIGHT
mouse button.
A small menu should appear...select the "Close"
option. You will be prompted to determine whether or
not you really want to disconnect.
Click "Yes" to shut down your connection.
CONFIGURING YOUR E-MAIL
Regardless of what program you use to get and send
your e-mail, there will be some things in common that
have to be set in order to access e-mail. A program
will always have a place for certain pieces of information,
namely the following:
SMTP Server (also referred to as Outgoing Mail Server)
(sometimes) POP3 Server (also referred to as Inbound
Mail Server)
POP3 user name
E-mail address (also referred to as "Your E-mail")
Reply-to address
Both the SMTP Server and POP3 Server are always mail.tmlp.com.
Your POP3 user name and E-mail address are always your
username followed by @mail.tmlp.com Your reply-to address
is your username followed by @tmlp.com. So, for example,
if your username is johnq, your POP3 user name and E-mail
address would be johnq@mail.tmlp.com, and your reply-to
address would be johnq@tmlp.com.
This information can be entered in
various places, depending on what program you use. For
example, in Netscape, you can set this information by
doing the following:
Click on "Options."
Click on "Mail And News Preferences."
Click on the tab labeled "Servers." You will
see boxes where you can fill in the information for
SMTP server, POP3 server, and POP3 User Name.
Click on the tab labeled "Identity." You will
see boxes where you can fill in the information
for E-mail address (the label is "Your E-Mail")
and "Reply-To-Address."
Click on "OK" to save your new settings..
